Yes.

The program that the Archive used to derive that h.264 file is too crude.

The source file:
http://www.archive.org/download/Big_Combo_1955/Big_Combo_1955.mkv

The well-known program ffmpeg reveals this about the source file:

Duration: 01:23:42.4, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A
Stream #0.0: Video: h264, yuv420p, 528x576 [PAR 16:11 DAR 4:3], 25.00 tb(r)
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo

Note that the display-aspect-ratio is 4:3 and the pixel-aspect ratio is 16:11.

The well-known program mplayer reveals this (among other things) about the source file:

ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=1.3333

In other words, the aspect-ratio of the picture is 1.3333.

The Archive's program, in its infinite simple-mindedness, completely ignored the aspect-ratio information in the original file and assumed that the pixels were square.

I have deleted the botched .mp4 file. This weekend, I will transcode the original file in order to produce a file that uses square pixels and that has the correct aspect-ratio, since this task is beyond the Archive's capabilities.

Thanks for many unique uploads and your general demand for the best possible renditions. 'The Big Combo' is an historic film at this point and deserves the best. Thanks again.

You're welcome. My computer is transcoding it right now.
